The Chinese LLM Release Carousel: Placing Bets on MiniMax

If you blink, you miss a new foundation model. The Chinese LLM release carousel has been spinning so fast lately that my GPU fans are basically running a permanent stress test. Between Qwen2.5 maxing out the chart sand DeepSeek-V3 breaking everyone’s HF download bandwidth, it feels like we get a new state-of-the-art frontier model every Tuesday.

Now, the rumor mill is pointing to MiniMax dropping their next major release next week. The original thread over on r/LocalLLaMA is a mix of pure hype and healthy skepticism. One user pointed out that “Qwen made 72B the new 14B,” which is annoyingly accurate. But MiniMax is a different beast entirely. They don’t just want to win the quantitative arena; they want to own the agentic and roleplay spaces.

The State of the Arena #

Let’s look at the actual numbers we’re dealing with right now. DeepSeek-V3 is sitting at 671B parameters. Sure, it’s a MoE architecture, meaning you’re only activating 37B for inference. But try fitting that into VRAM on a standard local rig. You can’t.

To run DeepSeek-V3 at decent speeds on a rented rig, you need a 2x8xVRAM box. Renting a Hetzner bare-metal server with dual 3090s will set you back around €260 a month. DigitalOcean won’t even sell you that configuration without entering enterprise negotiations. Most of us are stuck running 4-bit GGUF quants on a Mac Studio with 128GB of unified memory, watching llama.cpp crawl along at 10 tokens a second. It works, but it isn’t elegant.

This is exactly why the community is holding its breath for MiniMax. If they drop a dense 70B model that punches like a 100B+ MoE, the landscape shifts overnight.

The Audio and Agentic Angle #

Here is where I have a real opinion. MiniMax has historically crushed the audio and video modalities. Their text-to-speech engine is honestly better than ElevenLabs for certain tonal languages, and I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time building local voice clones with their architecture.

If next week’s release integrates native audio reasoning directly into the text weights—similar to what Qwen2-Audio attempted but completely missed the mark on—it will be a bloodbath. I haven’t tested this on ARM yet, mostly because my local cluster is strictly x86 paired with ancient PCIe 3.0 risers, but the community is genuinely split on whether their newer attention mechanisms will play nice with Apple Silicon.

My Actual Prediction #

I think MiniMax is going to launch a MoE. It’s the only way to compete with DeepSeek’s benchmark numbers without requiring a nuclear power plant to train. I just hope they don’t pull a Llama-3 and gatekeep the actual good weights behind an API.

Nothing kills local momentum faster than a “distilled” 8B release when we all know the 150B monster exists on a server farm in Beijing. We need the raw, unquantized safetensors. Give us the 16-bit files and let the GGUF crowd handle the compression.

If MiniMax plays their cards right, we are looking at a model that finally does reliable function calling without hallucinating JSON keys. If they screw it up, we just wait two more weeks for the next release on the carousel anyway. Place your bets. I’ll be over here watching my GPU temps.
