DeepSeek V4 Flash GA dropped this week, and the headline everyone is spamming is that it ties Sonnet 5 and Grok 4.5 on the DeepSWE benchmark. A local, supposedly lightweight model matching the heavyweight closed-source API kings on a grueling software engineering eval.
I am deeply skeptical, and honestly, if you’ve spent any time actually running these models on bare metal, you should be too.
The DeepSWE Illusion #
DeepSWE is the new holy grail for terminal-jockey AGI doomers. It tests multi-file refactoring, autonomous debugging, and context retention across massive codebases. When a model aces DeepSWE, it usually means one of two things: either we just leapfrogged OpenAI’s entire research division overnight, or the benchmark is bleeding out and leaking eval data into the training set.

But I’ve broken enough environments to know that a synthetic benchmark does not an autonomous developer make. Drop V4 Flash into your pipeline if you want to run cheap bulk unit tests. Keep your Claude API key for the actual refactoring.
