Self-Hosting vs. Cloud Subscriptions: The Real Cost of Owning Your Stack

Browsing the July 31 weekend victory thread over on r/personalfinance, I noticed a weird trend. People are somehow spending more money trying to be frugal. Specifically, the self-hosting crowd is coefficient-flexing to save $15 a month, and the math doesn’t always hold up.
User u/marketing_bro_92 posted about canceling six SaaS subscriptions—he killed Notion, Dropbox, and LastPass—by spinning up an old Dell Optiplex in his basement. Total claimed savings: $340 a year.
I love this energy. But doing this to save a few bucks is a trap.
The Ramen-Profitable Server Route #
If you want to ditch subscriptions, you have two real paths. Path one is renting bare metal or VPS instances.
Look, I self-host. I have a Docker compose file with 14 containers on a $14 Hetzner CX22 instance that would cost $80 on DigitalOcean. Hetzner’s pricing is aggressive if you don’t mind the server sitting in Frankfurt.
But compare setting up Vaultwarden on a VPS to just paying Bitwarden $10 a year. You have to set up Nginx Proxy Manager, generate SSL certs, lock down your firewall, and configure automated updates. I can do it in 45 minutes. Most people will spend an entire weekend doing it, realize they messed up the port forwarding, and expose their passwords to the open internet. To save $10 a year. This is overwhelmingly overkill for most people.
If you do go the cloud server route, use Podman instead of Docker. Rootless containers by default just makes sense for a public-facing box. I haven’t tested Podman’s rootless socket on ARM grsecurity kernels yet, so your mileage may vary, but on standard AMD64 it runs flawlessly with about 40MB less overhead per container.
The Home Server Albatross #
Path two is that Dell Optiplex in the closet.
The immediate savings look great because you’re avoiding monthly hyperscaler markups. Then you realize the power bill exists. A 10-year-old desktop idling 24/7 pulls around 40W. That’s roughly 350 kWh a year. At the national average of $0.16/kWh, you’re paying $56 a year just to spin the disk. The community is genuinely split on the hardware route, but frankly, running junk hardware usually costs more than buying a $150 N100 mini-PC that sips 8W.
And never pay for server-grade hardware for a home setup just to host Plex and Radarr. Overkill.
What u/marketing_bro_92 completely ignored in his victory post is the replacement cost of hardware, the risk-adjusted value of his own labor, and the sheer paranoia of managing an auth backend. One DNS misconfiguration and you’re locked out of your own data. Life is too short.
When Self-Hosting Actually Makes Sense #
Host software because you want granular privacy control over your family’s photos, or because you want to learn sysadmin skills that translate into a six-figure salary. Don’t do it to beat Mint out of $5 a month.
The frugal move is keeping your subscriptions lean and using the rest of the cash to max out your Roth IRA.
