First SaaS: A Beginner’s Guide to Building and Deploying Your First Software as a Service #

Step 1: Choose a Framework #

I just made my first SaaS and I’m still reeling from the experience. The community on r/sideproject was instrumental in helping me navigate the process. If you’re new to this like I was, start with a framework. I used Go (version 1.19.1) and the Revel framework (version 1.0.0). Revel is a lightweight alternative to Go’s Gin and Echo frameworks. It’s perfect for building a simple SaaS. go get github.com/revel/revel/v1.0.0

Step 2: Set Up a Database #

For my SaaS, I chose to use PostgreSQL (version 14.4) with the Revel ORM. I love this tool, but it has one fatal flaw - it’s not compatible with Go’s built-in database driver. You’ll need to install the pgx driver instead. go get github.com/jackc/pgx/v4

Step 3: Choose a Cloud Provider #

For deployment, I chose to use DigitalOcean (DO) over Hetzner. DO’s 1-click apps are a game-changer for beginners. They’re easy to set up and require minimal configuration. I also love DO’s pricing - $5/month for a basic droplet is unbeatable. doctl compute droplet create my-droplet --size s-1vcpu-1gb --image ubuntu-20-04-x64

Step 4: Set Up a Reverse Proxy #

I used NGINX (version 1.22.0) as my reverse proxy. It’s a beast of a server, but it’s perfect for handling high traffic. I also love NGINX’s caching capabilities - it can reduce server load by up to 70%. sudo apt-get install nginx

Step 5: Deploy Your SaaS #

Deployment was a breeze. I used Revel’s built-in support for Docker (version 20.10.12) to create a container for my SaaS. I also used the docker-compose tool to manage my containers. docker-compose up -d

Step 6: Monitor Your SaaS #

I used Prometheus (version 2.31.1) and Grafana (version 8.5.4) to monitor my SaaS. They’re a powerful combination that can help you identify performance bottlenecks and optimize your application. docker-compose up -d prometheus grafana
